Roadmap

Where vrOS goes next.

vrOS 2 is in Early Access. This page says what we finish before leaving it, what arrives during 2.x, and what vrOS 3 is.

There are no dates here, on purpose. An item moves to Shipped once it's in a release you can install, and the patch notes say exactly what changed.

Before Early Access ends

Calibration and tracking that hold up on their own.

We leave Early Access when tracking is ready: aligned once, trusted for the whole session, and set up without a guide open next to you.

Tracker alignment (Steam Frame)

In development

Lighthouse trackers line up with a Steam Frame after a short walk today. What's left is the part that matters most: a room lock that holds through a long session, every session.

Full-body tracking

In development

Your body measured once and saved, tracking that adapts to each avatar's proportions — VRChat first — and trackers that send their poses over OSC joining the rest.

Slime trackers

In development

vrOS reads Slime trackers directly, with no separate server. Next: simpler setup and configuration — connecting, Wi-Fi, firmware, and where each tracker sits on your body — and support for Butterfly trackers.

During 2.x

Ahead of vrOS 3.

These ship as 2.x updates, so nobody waits for vrOS 3 to get them.

Codec choice for Steam Frame streaming

In development

Choose the codec your Steam Frame streams PC VR with, as an added choice next to Steam Link's own: PyroWave, a wavelet codec that spends more bandwidth to keep latency very low, and a second codec we'll name once it's settled.

Linux on Steam

In development

The Linux x86-64 build, for desktop Linux and SteamOS, is in development and not on Steam yet. It arrives during 2.x.

vrOS 3

vrOS on the headset itself.

vrOS 3 adds an app that runs on standalone headsets and connects to vrOS on your PC.

A native headset app

Planned

An OpenXR app on the headset that connects straight to vrOS on your PC over its own link and brings your desktop and windows to you. Steam Frame first, then other standalone headsets that can run it.

Wi-Fi 7, two ways to connect

Planned

On the Steam Frame that link runs over Wi-Fi 7: through the Frame's wireless adapter, which is always available, or over your own Wi-Fi network if you'd rather.

Later

On the list, not yet scheduled.

Things we mean to do after the sections above, in an order that follows what people ask for most.

Eye-tracking navigation

Later

Look at a control and press to click, with dwell-to-click as an option you turn on. It uses the eye tracking vrOS already reads from the Steam Frame.

vrOS 1 features, coming back

Later

These vrOS 1 features aren't in vrOS 2 yet. They return over time, the creator tools as extensions you turn on. Until then, vrOS 1 stays available on the legacy branch.

  • The Time tab: alarms, timers, stopwatch and calendar
  • Media controls
  • VRChat account features: sign-in, friends and world info
  • XSOverlay- and OVR Toolkit-compatible notifications
  • Twitch chat commands and channel-point actions
  • The custom theme builder, settings search, the Haptics settings page and the full-trigger click mode
  • Presets that launch an app or a web page
  • Sense: speech-to-text, translation and OCR
